Hyaluronic acid filler treatment at Medical Time in Belgrade

What hyaluronic acid is and how a filler works

Hyaluronic acid is a substance our body produces naturally and which is found in large amounts in the skin, joints and connective tissue. Its main role is to bind water — a single gram of hyaluronic acid can hold several hundred times its own weight in water, giving the skin fullness, elasticity and hydration. Over time its levels in the skin decline, the skin loses firmness, and wrinkles appear along with a sense that the face has deflated.

A hyaluronic filler is a gel based on stabilised hyaluronic acid that is injected into or beneath the skin. The filler physically fills the space where volume has been lost, smooths the wrinkle and restores contour. Because it is a substance naturally close to the body, the organism gradually breaks it down over time, so the effect is not permanent — but that also makes it safer than permanent implants.

Fillers differ in density and purpose: softer products are used for fine lines and skin hydration, while denser, structural fillers are used for the cheekbones, jawline and chin, where genuine tissue support is needed. At Medical Time the doctor selects the type and amount of filler according to the area, the depth of the wrinkle and the result you want to achieve.

It is important to distinguish fillers from Botox, as the two are often confused. Botox relaxes the muscle and acts on dynamic wrinkles, while filler replaces volume and fills. For many patients the best result comes precisely from a combination — but that decision is made by the doctor after examining the face.

Who hyaluronic filler treatment is for

Hyaluronic fillers are intended for people who want to soften the signs of ageing or to enhance and balance their facial features, without surgery or a lengthy recovery. Because the effect is visible immediately, the treatment is also well suited before an important event, when you want a refreshed look in a short time.

The most common reasons patients choose hyaluronic filler are:

  • pronounced nasolabial folds (from the nose towards the corners of the mouth) and so-called marionette lines
  • thin or asymmetrical lips, loss of the lip border and vertical lines above the upper lip
  • lost cheekbone volume and a hollow, tired appearance of the mid-face
  • under-eye dark circles and the tear-trough hollow, where appropriately indicated
  • a poorly defined jawline and chin that would benefit from more definition
  • fine lines and dry, tired skin in need of extra hydration and fullness

What the hyaluronic filler treatment involves, step by step

The treatment always begins with a conversation and an examination of the face. The doctor assesses symmetry, the condition of the skin and what is realistically achievable, and then agrees a plan with you — which areas will be treated, with which type of filler and in what amount. This step is the most important, because how natural the result looks depends on the assessment and technique, not on the product alone.

Before the injection itself the skin is cleansed and disinfected. Most modern fillers already contain a local anaesthetic (lidocaine), and a numbing cream is applied if needed, so discomfort is kept to a minimum. The doctor then injects the filler into the predetermined points with a fine needle or cannula, occasionally moulding the tissue with the fingers so the gel is evenly distributed.

The treatment itself usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the number of areas. Immediately afterwards there may be mild redness or a feeling of tightness, and the result is visible right away — although the final appearance settles over a few days, once the temporary swelling subsides and the filler settles into the tissue.

There is no lengthy recovery period after the treatment: most patients return to their usual activities straight away. The doctor gives you clear instructions for the first 24 to 48 hours and, if you wish, schedules a short follow-up to review the result.

Results and how long the hyaluronic filler effect lasts

The advantage of hyaluronic fillers is that the result is visible immediately — the wrinkle is filled, the lip is shaped and facial volume is restored by the end of the treatment. A full, settled appearance stabilises within a few days, once the initial swelling subsides, so the final impression is best judged around a week after the treatment.

How long the effect lasts depends on the type of filler, the treated area, your metabolism and lifestyle. As a rough guide, in the lips and more mobile parts of the face the effect usually lasts from 6 to 12 months, while in structural areas such as the cheekbones or jawline it can last as long as 12 to 18 months. It breaks down faster in people with a faster metabolism, in smokers and with significant sun exposure.

Because the body gradually breaks hyaluronic acid down, the treatment is refreshed as needed. Regular, moderate maintenance avoids the effect of sudden change and preserves a natural look. It is realistic to expect a refreshed, rested appearance, but not a complete and permanent change of your facial features — the aim of a good treatment is for you to look like a more rested version of yourself, not like someone else.

Aftercare following hyaluronic filler treatment

Recovery after hyaluronic fillers is short and simple, but for the first day or two there are clear rules that help the result stay even and reduce the risk of swelling and bruising. Mild redness, tenderness to the touch and localised swelling are common and subside on their own.

Recommendations for the first days after treatment:

  • do not touch or massage the treated area, unless your doctor specifically shows you how
  • avoid the sauna, the gym, hot baths and intense physical exertion for 24 to 48 hours
  • for the first 24 hours avoid make-up on the treated area and excessive heat (hairdryer, tanning bed)
  • cut down on alcohol and salty food, as they encourage water retention and swelling
  • sleep on your back for the first few nights if the lips or mid-face were treated
  • use sun protection and avoid direct, strong sunlight for a few days

Risks and contraindications

When the treatment is performed by a doctor, with a quality product and correct technique, hyaluronic fillers are safe, and adverse reactions are most often mild and temporary. The most common are redness, swelling, tenderness and occasional bruising at the injection site, which subside over a few days.

Less often, lumps or irregularities may appear, and these can usually be corrected by massage or, if needed, by dissolving the filler with a special enzyme (hyaluronidase) — one of the advantages of hyaluronic fillers over permanent materials. Serious complications, such as a hypersensitivity reaction or impaired blood supply to the tissue, are very rare, but it is precisely because of them that the treatment should be carried out by a trained doctor who can recognise and manage them.

The treatment is not recommended, or is postponed, in the following situations: pregnancy and breastfeeding, an active skin infection or inflammation on the face (e.g. an active cold sore), a tendency to keloid scarring, a known allergy to the product's ingredients, and during active autoimmune or certain other chronic conditions. That is why a conversation with the doctor about your health, medication and previous aesthetic procedures is essential before the treatment.

Why have hyaluronic fillers at Medical Time

At Medical Time hyaluronic fillers are applied by a doctor, who assesses the whole face rather than individual wrinkles alone. This approach gives a balanced, natural result and preserves your expression — the aim is not to change the face, but to make it look more rested and fresh.

We work exclusively with proven hyaluronic acid products and observe high standards of hygiene and safety. Before the treatment you receive an honest assessment and realistic expectations and, if appropriate, a suggestion to combine treatments so the result is better and longer-lasting.

  • treatment performed by a doctor, with a whole-face assessment and an individual plan
  • proven hyaluronic acid products and high standards of hygiene
  • a natural result with your expression preserved, without overdoing it
  • the option to correct and dissolve the filler if needed
  • an honest assessment and realistic expectations before treatment
  • everything in one place — consultation, treatment and follow-up reviews

Cost — hyaluronic fillers

The cost of hyaluronic filler treatment depends on the number of treated areas, the amount and type of product (softer or structural filler), and the result you want to achieve. Some areas need only one millilitre of product, while a more extensive correction requires more. You receive the exact price and treatment plan after a consultation with the doctor.

Frequently asked questions about hyaluronic fillers

Discomfort is minimal. Most fillers already contain a local anaesthetic, and a numbing cream is applied if needed, so the treatment is most often described as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful.

Yes. The effect is visible immediately after the treatment, and the final appearance settles over a few days, once the initial swelling subsides.

It depends on the area and the type of filler. In the lips and mobile parts of the face usually 6 to 12 months, and in structural areas such as the cheekbones up to 12 to 18 months.

Not necessarily. With a moderate amount and correct technique the result is natural. At Medical Time the aim is a balanced look, and the amount and plan are agreed with the doctor.

Unlike permanent materials, hyaluronic filler can be dissolved with a special enzyme (hyaluronidase) when there is a need, a decision made by the doctor.

Most often straight away. There may be mild swelling or redness, and you should avoid intense exertion, the sauna and hot baths for the first 24 to 48 hours.

The treatment should be performed by a doctor, in appropriate conditions. That is the most important requirement for safety and for a natural, balanced result.
